A fresh controversy has erupted around actor-politician Vijay after a senior member of his own party publicly criticised him over his ongoing marital dispute. Tamilaga Vetri Kazhagam (TVK) women’s wing leader Ranjana Nachiyar said the actor should respect his wife before aspiring to become a political leader.
The remark came amid the ongoing divorce proceedings between Vijay and his wife Sangeetha Sornalingam. In an interview with news agency ANI, Ranjana expressed disappointment with Vijay’s personal conduct and questioned how he could speak about women’s empowerment in public while his own family issues remain unresolved.
Her remarks came a day after Vijay, speaking at a TVK Women's Day event, appeared to respond tacitly to the ongoing controversy over reports of a divorce plea filed by his wife. Addressing supporters, he said: "Over the recent developments I shall deal with it. Don't be hurt. It's not worth it. We shall look after only public issues."
Speaking to ANI, Ranjana said she was not against divorce as such and acknowledged that marital differences can happen in any family. "When you said it is not worth it, what did you mean, leader? Is it your wife that is not worth it? Or your marriage?" she asked in her message.
She further stated, If a man doesn’t respect his own wife, how can we believe he respects other women. He gives a lot of manifesto for women, like he is going to give a ring for the newborn children and so many things but it’s more important to protect is own family first.”
“I don’t know how women support such kind of behaviour, but I don’t support this. A woman at home should be worshipped. She delivered two kids, and she has been living with him for more than 25 years, so first of all, he should respect his own family because that is more important than becoming the leader of Tamil Nadu.”
Ranjana concluded with ‘I support Vijay and TVK.” Her criticism also referred to Vijay’s recent public appearance with actress Trisha Krishnan at a wedding ceremony, which drew widespread attention on social media.
She also warned that the behaviour and language of leaders could influence young supporters, particularly Gen-Z, who closely follow celebrities.
The controversy comes at a crucial time for Vijay, who recently launched his political party Tamilaga Vetri Kazhagam and is actively preparing for the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections.
The actor-turned-politician has been positioning himself as a major political challenger in the state.

While Vijay has not responded directly to Ranjana’s remarks yet, the issue has triggered widespread debate online, with supporters and critics weighing in on the intersection of personal life and political leadership.
