Indian cinema is set for a bold and unconventional cinematic experiment with the upcoming release of Gandhi Talks, a silent film starring Vijay Sethupathi, Aditi Rao Hydari, Arvind Swamy and Siddharth Jadhav. The makers have officially announced that the film will hit theatres on January 30, 2026, coinciding with Mahatma Gandhi’s death anniversary — a fitting date for a project that explores silence as its core narrative device.
Directed by Kishore Pandurang Belekar, Gandhi Talks marks a rare return to silent storytelling in modern Indian cinema. In an era dominated by loud action sequences and punchy dialogue, the film embraces stillness, visual expression and the emotive power of music to communicate its story. According to the director, the project is about “trusting silence” — stripping cinema down to its most elemental forms of performance and emotion.
Director Kishore Belekar shared, “Gandhi Talks is a film about trusting silence. As Indian cinema marks over a century of storytelling, we wanted to return to the medium's most elemental form pure performance and emotion.”
“The actors embraced that vulnerability completely, and A.R. Rahman's score became the film's voice. With Zee Studios', Meera Chopra's support, we were able to make a bold, honest piece of cinema.”
Adding a unique dimension to the film is its musical score by A.R. Rahman, which effectively becomes the emotional voice of the narrative in the absence of spoken words. Rather than relying on traditional dialogue, Rahman’s compositions guide the audience through the emotional landscape of the story, elevating silence into a powerful storytelling tool.
The ensemble cast has embraced the vulnerability required for silent performance, with Sethupathi, Hydari, Swamy and Jadhav conveying complex human emotions without dialogues. Audiences last saw Vijay Sethupathi in high-profile works, including Thalaivan Thalaivii, while Aditi Rao Hydari continues to expand her repertoire across languages.
Gandhi Talks gained early attention when it became the first silent film to be screened at the 23rd International Film Festival of India (IFFI) in Goa in 2023, setting expectations high for its theatrical release.
Slated for January 30, 2026, Gandhi Talks promises a thought-provoking cinematic experience.
