Actor Aditi Rao Hydari has opened up about the growing culture of “paid negativity” and smear campaigns in the entertainment industry, saying that while criticism is not new, the speed and scale of misinformation today have made the environment far more challenging.
Nearly two decades into her career, Aditi believes that gossip and agenda-driven narratives have intensified with the rise of digital platforms. Speaking about how she copes with the constant chatter, she said that her approach is simple: stay centred and ignore the noise.
“Celebrity smear campaigns aren’t new,” she said, adding, “But I see it around me all the time. Occasionally, I come across random rubbish about myself. I ignore it because I know there’s some agenda behind it.”
According to Aditi, the expansion of online platforms — many of which are perceived as credible sources of information — has blurred the line between fact and speculation. She expressed concern over how easily misinformation spreads and how it shapes public perception.
“There’s so much misinformation on platforms that are supposed to be factual. Add paid negativity and hidden agendas, and it becomes toxic. Sometimes information is a burden. The mystery surrounding actors has faded,” she added.
Despite acknowledging that criticism can be difficult, Aditi maintained that she does not allow it to disturb her peace of mind. She credits her mother’s advice for helping her maintain perspective in moments of negativity.
“My mother always said when someone is mean, the issue lies within them. That thought keeps me centred,” she shared.

Over the years, Aditi has worked across multiple film industries and formats, building a diverse body of work. Her recent projects, including Gandhi Talks and the 2024 streaming series Heeramandi, have received critical attention. However, she pointed out that professional stability in the film industry is not solely determined by acclaim or box-office numbers, especially for those without strong industry backing.
“Talent exists beyond success and failure. But if you’re an outsider, success influences opportunities. Even after a hit, you wait for the right scripts. Commercial success doesn’t automatically sort your year,” she said.
Reflecting on the evolving nature of fame, Aditi suggested that constant exposure and unchecked narratives have altered the way audiences engage with public figures. While the glamour of cinema remains intact, she feels the space has become more complicated for artists trying to focus on their craft amid the noise.
