At the audio launch event for Vettaiyan, Tamil superstar Rajinikanth lauded his co-actor Amitabh Bachchan for his remarkable resilience and dedication. The two actors are reuniting on screen after 33 years, having last shared the screen in the 1991 film Hum.
Rajinikanth highlighted Amitabh Bachchan’s determination during a particularly challenging period in his life, revealing how the legendary actor had to work tirelessly to overcome severe financial difficulties.
Recalling Big B's struggles, Rajinikanth shared how Big B was once at the pinnacle of his career but chose to step away from everything, retreating to the mountains. However, he returned and launched Amitabh Bachchan Corporation Limited (ABCL). Unfortunately, the venture led to bankruptcy, leaving Amitabh in substantial debt.
Rajinikanth recounted, “Amitabh had to sell his Juhu house and other properties in Mumbai. Many in the industry were not sympathetic to his plight.” It was then that filmmaker Yash Chopra extended a helping hand by offering Big B a role in the 2000 film Mohabbatein.
Rajinikanth recalled the moving story, saying, “One day, he walked to Yash Chopra’s house wearing a monkey cap because he no longer had a driver, as he couldn’t pay them. He asked Yash for work. Yash immediately brought a signed cheque and gave it to him, but Amitji declined, saying he would take it only if he was given work. And thus, he received Mohabbatein. Soon after, he also got KBC.”

Rajinikanth went on to praise Amitabh Bachchan’s relentless effort to overcome his debts. “He did anything and everything. He did all kinds of ads. People in the Bombay industry laughed when they saw this. For three years, despite having many health issues, he worked for 18 hours a day and cleared all his dues. Not just that, he bought back the old house, and even bought three more houses in that same lane. That’s Amitabh Bachchan! He is 82 now and still works for 10 hours a day,” Rajinikanth shared.
Currently, Amitabh Bachchan is hosting Kaun Banega Crorepati 16 and recently starred in the box office hit Kalki 2898 AD. His upcoming film Vettaiyan, co-starring Rajinikanth, is set to release on October 10.
