Actor R Madhavan has spoken candidly about the ongoing Hindi-Marathi language debate that has sparked widespread discussion across Maharashtra.
Known for his versatility and grounded persona, Madhavan brought a personal and inclusive perspective to the issue, drawing from his own diverse upbringing.
Born and raised in Jamshedpur, Bihar (now Jharkhand), Madhavan grew up amid a rich mix of cultures and languages.
Speaking to IANS, the Aap Jaisa Koi actor emphasised that language had never posed a barrier in his life or career. He said, "No, I have never experienced it. I speak Tamil. I speak Hindi. And I have studied in Kolhapur also. I have learnt Marathi also. So, I have never had any problems because of language."
When the Maharashtra government ordered Hindi to be taught as a third language in all state-run primary schools in addition to Marathi and English in April, the controversy gathered steam. Many people criticised the directive, especially after videos purportedly showing Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) members attacking non-Marathi speakers went viral online.
The situation ignited a broader conversation on the role of language in cultural identity and social unity. At the trailer launch of Son of Sardaar 2, actor Ajay Devgn addressed the issue in his trademark 'Singham' tone, declaring, "Aata Majhi Satakli." Actor Shilpa Shetty also acknowledged the situation, saying she was aware of the ongoing concerns.
Meanwhile, Shikhar Pahariya, the partner of actress Janhvi Kapoor, took to Instagram to share a heartfelt note on the topic. "Language shapes who we are... Marathi is no exception... But that pride cannot come at the cost of others’ dignity. Especially others who are making an honest, hard living" he wrote.

On the work front, R Madhavan's professional schedule is still very full. He will soon appear in the movie Dhurandhar, which stars Ranveer Singh, Akshaye Khanna, Sanjay Dutt, and Arjun Rampal.
Alongside Rakul Preet Singh and Ajay Devgn, he will also be seen in Luv Ranjan's De De Pyaar De 2. Madhavan contributed to an already exciting 2025 by appearing in Kesari 2, Test, and Aap Jaisa Koi this year.
