  • Film explores Predator home world and Yautja culture
  • Dek, a Yautja outcast, teams up with a robot for survival

The hunt returns to living rooms this week as Predator: Badlands makes its digital debut. After a theatrical run that brought in over $184 million worldwide, the sci fi horror sequel is now streaming on JioHotstar from February 12 in English, Hindi, Tamil and Telugu.

Directed by Dan Trachtenberg, the film continues his bold reinvention of the Predator universe. Trachtenberg previously directed Prey, which was widely praised for refreshing the decades old franchise with a lean, survival driven narrative. With Badlands, he goes even further. Instead of humans being hunted on Earth, the story shifts to the Predators’ own home world, giving audiences a deeper look into Yautja culture.

At the center of the film is Dek, played by Dimitrius Schuster-Koloamatangi, a young Yautja outcast who crash lands on a hostile planet. To reclaim his honor, Dek must kill a powerful apex predator and prove himself worthy of the hunt. What makes this chapter unusual is the alliance he forms with Thia, a Weyland Yutani Corporation robot portrayed by Elle Fanning. The pairing of a Predator warrior and a human made synthetic adds an unexpected emotional layer to the action heavy narrative.

In a surprising pop culture crossover, the onboard computer for Kwei’s ship is voiced by the Duffer Brothers, creators of Stranger Things. Trachtenberg himself was once attached to direct an episode of the show’s fifth season, making the collaboration a fitting genre moment.

The Predator franchise began in 1987 with Predator, directed by John McTiernan and starring Arnold Schwarzenegger. That film’s blend of jungle warfare and extraterrestrial horror became a cult classic and launched multiple sequels, including Predator 2, Predators, and The Predator. The universe has also expanded into crossovers like Alien vs. Predator and various video games and comics.

With Predator: Killer of Killers and Predator: Badlands both released in 2025, Trachtenberg has openly spoken about his vision for a potential trilogy. If Badlands performs strongly on streaming, a third installment could follow, further exploring the mythology of the alien hunters.

There have also been reports that Schwarzenegger is in talks to return to the franchise in some capacity, while Prey star Amber Midthunder has expressed interest in reprising her role in a sequel.

For now, Predator: Badlands offers fans a rare perspective shift. Instead of watching humans try to survive the hunt, viewers are invited into the predator’s world itself. What this really means is the franchise is no longer just about survival horror. It is about identity, exile and proving oneself in a brutal universe where only the strongest endure.
