The re-release of the iconic Tamil film Padayappa has turned into a grand celebration for fans of superstar Rajinikanth. The film was re-released in theatres on December 12 to mark Rajinikanth’s birthday, and the response has been overwhelming. Even after so many years, audiences returned to cinemas in large numbers, proving that Padayappa still holds a special place in Tamil cinema.
Following the huge box office success of the re-release, Rajinikanth met actress Ramya Krishnan and director K. S. Ravikumar to celebrate the moment. Pictures from their meeting have gone viral on social media. In one of the most loved photos, the trio is seen recreating the famous “Padayappa salute,” which instantly brought back memories for fans.
Padayappa is widely regarded as one of the most important films in Rajinikanth’s career. Released in 1999, the movie was a massive hit and is often credited as the first Tamil film to cross the Rs 50 crore mark at the box office. Film trade experts believe that its success set a new benchmark for big-budget Tamil cinema at the time.

What makes Padayappa truly special is its unforgettable characters. Rajinikanth’s powerful performance as Padayappa remains iconic, but Ramya Krishnan’s role as Neelambari is equally legendary. Even today, Neelambari is considered one of the strongest female characters in Indian cinema. Her screen presence, dialogue delivery, and intensity left a lasting impact on audiences.
Interestingly, the film’s re-release has performed better than several other popular re-released films from last year, including Sachin, Kushi, and Attagasam. This clearly shows that Padayappa’s appeal has not faded with time. Instead, new audiences are discovering the film, while longtime fans are enjoying it all over again on the big screen.
During the celebration, director K. S. Ravikumar was also seen presenting bouquets to Rajinikanth and Ramya Krishnan, thanking them for being part of such a memorable film. Fans are now actively discussing the possibility of a Padayappa 2, though no official announcement has been made.
Ramya Krishnan, who has played many iconic roles like Ammam, Neelambari, and Sivagami Devi, recently shared screen space with Rajinikanth in Jailer. She is also set to appear in Jailer 2. The success of Padayappa’s re-release once again proves that true classics never lose their magic.
