Superstar Rajinikanth paid his final respects to veteran CPI politician R Nallakannu at his home in Chennai's T Nagar.

One of the most senior leaders of Tamil Nadu's Communist movement, Ramasamy Nallakannu, died on Wednesday afternoon at the Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital in Chennai at the age of 101.

Speaking to reporters, Rajinikanth discussed his lifelong admiration for the late leader and claimed that Nallakannu had always been a man of integrity and simplicity. He said that although he had not directly witnessed many great leaders in the past, he thought Nallakannu possessed many of these traits.

The superstar said, "I have not seen Omandurar, Arignar Anna, Kamarajar, or Kakkan. But in Comrade Nallakannu, I saw all of them combined. Nallakannu is an example of how respect and honor naturally come to a person who is good and honest. He was a great soul. My heartfelt condolences and tribute to Comrade Nallakannu.”

An official release from the Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital and Madras Medical College stated that Nallakannu was taken to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) on February 1st because of health issues. Despite constant enhanced monitoring and critical care from a multidisciplinary medical team, his condition changed over the course of 24 days of treatment.

But starting in the early hours of Wednesday, his condition deteriorated and his responsiveness to treatment progressively weakened. All of his vital organs failed, even though he was kept on enhanced life support. At approximately 1:55 p.m., he was pronounced dead.

Earlier on Wednesday, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin paid a heartfelt homage to senior leader R Nallakannu, describing him as a "political volcano" and a "indomitable comrade" whose life would serve as a beacon of hope for future generations.

He quoted the late leader's own words and wrote, "Even though I lack proper vision in one eye, there is another eye in my heart. That is the good eye."

The CM highlighted Nallakannu's strong spirit despite physical difficulties in a touching tribute posted on X.

He called Nallakannu "an uncompromising fighter" who never wavered in his commitment to the working people despite being imprisoned, tortured, and subjected to extreme personal adversity.
