Netflix’s Stranger Things bids an emotional adieu with a dramatic finale. The makers delighted the fans with the release of One Last Adventure: The Making of Stranger Things 5 documentary, giving a behind-the-scenes glimpse of the series.
The documentary depicts the conclusion of an era for the science fiction series that grew up alongside its cast and fans, and was released on the streaming site on January 12.
The documentary follows the Stranger Things crew through the last phase of production, which includes the show's final sequence and, appropriately, the story's conclusion. The documentary is particularly remarkable because of how unvarnished and unprocessed it seems.
The Duffer Brothers started filming the last episode before the script was finished, which is one of the most unexpected discoveries. There was a lot of strain because this was the culmination of years of narrative and really high expectations.
Some members of the team worked with evolving material because sets were built based on early conceptions and lengthy discussions rather than locked pages. The Netflix documentary documented the filming of Episode 8, The Rightside Up.
In the documentary, Matt said, “We went into production without having a finished script for the finale. That was scary because we wanted to get it right.” He added, “We are shooting episode 8, which isn’t completely written yet. Everyone on set is walking around with red script pages.”
However, the cast members who grew up on the show own the emotional core. During the last shoot, Finn Wolfhard, Noah Schnapp, Sadie Sink, Gaten Matarazzo, and Caleb McLaughlin can be seen standing together while the crew cheers them on. Cara Buono, Charlie Heaton, and Natalia Dyer are among the other seasoned cast members who silently observe from the sidelines, savouring the moment.
However, Finn Wolfhard delivered a short emotional speech and said, “I started this show when I was 12 with these guys, and it’s gonna sound sad, but I didn’t feel like I had a lot of friends when I was a kid. When I talked to the Duffers for the first time, it felt like I had friends. And now I have so many more friends.”
The documentary also reveals the scope of the last season. After almost 240 shooting days, thousands of setups, and hundreds of hours of video, Season 5 came to an end. The documentary, which was directed by Martina Radwan, follows the mental and physical strain of wrapping up such a large-scale production.
