In a candid conversation on IMDb's Ask Each Other Anything series, Suriya, the celebrated Tamil actor known for his diverse roles, shared fascinating insights into his latest film Kanguva, his journey in the Indian film industry, and his gratitude for the influence of Bollywood actors like Aamir Khan.
Suriya’s portrayal of Kanguva in his upcoming film is expected to be a powerful and inspirational one. Reflecting on the role, Suriya explained, “I always want to do something that’s different from who I am. In most of my films, I take on those kinds of challenges. Be it Pithamagan, Ghajini, and even Singam or Rolex.” He elaborated on the character of Kanguva, describing him as “a leader” and someone who is “a role model” for his community. Suriya’s approach to the role highlights his desire to embody qualities that inspire trust and respect, both from his clan and the audience. “He’s a complete package,” Suriya says, emphasizing that Kanguva isn't just a warrior, but a figure who grows from childhood to fatherhood, carrying the weight of his community's hopes and expectations.
When the conversation turned to his Hindi remakes, Suriya expressed his appreciation for Aamir Khan, particularly in how Aamir helped bring greater recognition to him in North India. "For people who are not aware of the remake, I would like to say again Kaakha Kaakha was Force* here, Ghajini was of course just Ghajini in Hindi, and Singham of course was made, but with a lot of changes," Suriya explained. Reflecting on the impact of Ghajini, he said, "I would actually go back and thank Aamir Khan sir because usually when a remade film is done, the original actor or the cast and the directors, they are not discussed in front of the media. But for the first time, I think, Aamir sir made sure that he spoke about the film and spoke about all the actors and the director.”
Suriya was especially thankful that Aamir Khan, in his promotion of Ghajini’s Hindi version, repeatedly mentioned Suriya by name. “He was solely responsible for people in North India, people who don’t speak Tamil, to know about me,” said Suriya. Acknowledging that Aamir’s efforts helped bridge regional divides, Suriya added, “He introduced me to the rest of the audience,” referring to the significant recognition he gained among Hindi-speaking viewers.
The conversation also touched upon Suriya’s admiration for Bollywood classics and his desire to take on iconic roles from the past. He mentioned the legendary Amitabh Bachchan, particularly his portrayal of 'Vijay' in Zanjeer (1973), stating, “I think everything started in 1975 when Sholay and Zanjeer started and the angry young man look started off with those films. The character played by Amitabh ji, a character named 'Vijay' in Zanjeer. I love it—it’s an iconic film, and I would love to again relive those moments.” The role of 'Vijay' in Zanjeer marked the beginning of a new era in Hindi cinema, and Suriya expressed a deep admiration for the character, hoping to bring his own interpretation to such a legendary role.
On the lighter side, Disha Patani, who also appeared in the series, was asked about her dream role. "I love superhero movies," she said, naming Wonder Woman as a character she would love to play, adding a fun twist to the otherwise serious conversation.
With the release of Kanguva around the corner, the trio—Suriya, Disha Patani, and director Siva—shared a glimpse into their creative process, teasing fans about the epic scale of the movie, its powerful locations, and the formidable presence of Bobby Deol as the antagonist.
