Fans have been eagerly awaiting the biggest fashion night of the year, and the 2026 Met Gala is all set to surprise them with an exciting new dress code that will completely change our perception of red carpet style.
Vogue has finally announced the official theme of the 2026 Met Gala, which is ‘Fashion Is Art.’ The theme will reflect the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s spring 2026 exhibition, “Costume Art.” The takeaway from the theme is that the art world is no longer centred around fashion. It's the realm of art.
The organiser announced the theme of the Met Gala 2026 in an Instagram post, explaining that the exhibit explores “centrality of the dressed body.”
More than 400 items will be on display, including paintings, clothing from the Costume Institute's Collection, and other pieces. Attendees of the Met Gala this year are likely to draw inspiration from the performance and experiment with the event's expansive dress code.
For the Costume Institute, the 2026 show represents a significant turning point. The exhibition, which debuted in November, marks the opening of the Institute's first permanent galleries within the museum.
Fashion will literally be at the heart of The Met thanks to the almost 12,000-square-foot Condé M. Nast Galleries, which will be located next to the Great Hall.
The "Costume Art" show will start a few days after the May 4 Met Gala and run from May 10, 2026, to January 10, 2027. The exhibition and gala run together as usual. The red carpet turns become a living thesis statement and preview.
"The centrality of the dressed body in the museum's vast collection" is the subject of Bolton's display. He matches historical and modern costumes from the Costume Institute with artwork, sculptures, and artefacts that span 5,000 years of art history.
