Actor Shah Rukh Khan made a historic debut at the Metropolitan Museum of Art's Met Gala in New York City on May 5th, and his appearance has landed him the top spot on the list of best-dressed men. According to fashion data platform Launchmetrics, the US media reported that the Bollywood superstar's sartorial choice made a significant impact.
Shah Rukh Khan, 59, the first male Bollywood star to grace the Met Gala red carpet, turned heads in a striking all-black ensemble designed by Sabyasachi Mukherjee. The outfit exuded elegance and sophistication, solidifying his status as a global style icon.
However, Shah Rukh Khan's debut was not without its share of controversy. A video circulated on social media showing a reporter asking the actor to introduce himself, which sparked outrage among his fans. Many felt this was disrespectful and demonstrated a lack of preparation on the part of the reporter.
Adding to the awkwardness, even the Met Gala hosts, Teyana Taylor and Ego Nwodim, appeared unaware of Shah Rukh Khan's immense fame during their interview with him and Sabyasachi. This prompted Sabyasachi to introduce the actor, stating, "He is probably the most famous man in the world." This incident drew criticism from netizens, who deemed the red carpet interviewers "unprepared" and "disrespectful" for not recognizing the global icon.
Despite the initial awkwardness, Shah Rukh Khan's stunning Met Gala debut received widespread praise from fans and celebrities alike. Filmmaker Karan Johar expressed his admiration on his Instagram story, referring to Shah Rukh as "The King" and sharing a photo of his outfit.
Shah Rukh Khan's all-black ensemble comprised a floor-length elongated coat, a silk shirt, and wool trousers. He also carried a striking walking stick, a dandy accessory conceptualized by Mukherjee, featuring a Bengal tiger crafted in 18-karat gold. The actor's Instagram post showcasing his Met Gala look has garnered significant attention, amassing over 5.7 million likes and 80,500 replies. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Shah Rukh generated $19 million in Media Impact Value (MIV), securing the top position on the best-dressed list.
Punjabi actor-singer Diljit Dosanjh also made a notable appearance at the Met Gala, securing the third spot with an MIV of $7.3 million. Dosanjh's Prabal Gurung outfit, inspired by royal Sikh attire, was a vibrant and culturally rich choice.
Diljit Dosanjh, 41, stood out for his unique style and cultural representation. His ensemble featured a cape adorned with Gurumukhi script, a bejeweled turban, stone-studded necklaces, and a sheathed sword. His attire paid homage to his heritage and added a distinctive flair to the Met Gala red carpet.
Other Indian celebrities who attended the prestigious fashion event included Isha Ambani, Natasha Poonawalla, and Manish Malhotra.
