It seems former Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has traded political debates for sunsets on the ocean — and social media can’t stop talking about it. The 53-year-old politician was recently photographed sharing a kiss with pop sensation Katy Perry aboard her 24-metre yacht, Caravelle, off the coast of Santa Barbara, California.

The pictures, published by the Daily Mail, show Trudeau shirtless and relaxed as he kissed Perry during what appeared to be a romantic getaway.

According to reports, the photo was taken in September by a passenger on a nearby whale-watching boat. It went viral right away and sparked a flurry of online reactions.

While some users were taken aback by the former leader’s beachside rendezvous, others couldn’t resist weighing in with strong opinions.

Another X (formerly Twitter) user took a cheeky swipe at both, joking, “Justin Trudeau and Katy Perry. One pretended to be an astronaut. One pretended to be a Prime Minister.”

Another user wrote, “To all of you who voted the liberals in, how ya feeling now? He doesn’t give a sh*t about Canada.” While another quipped, “This is exactly what Justin should have been doing all along. Canada might have been spared.”

Still, not everyone was ready to judge. One person chimed in with a more measured response: “Katy Perry is a celeb. I think a former Prime Minister should be allowed to live in peace as a commoner. I guess some view Justin Trudeau as a celeb, I don’t.”

According to the Daily Mail, Perry was enjoying a short break from her Lifetimes world tour when the photo was taken.

The witness who captured the image recalled the surprising moment, saying, “She pulled up her boat next to a small public whale-watching boat, then they started making out. I didn’t realise who she was with until I saw the tattoo on the guy’s arm and I immediately realised it was Justin Trudeau.”

That tattoo — Trudeau’s distinctive ‘Haida raven’ design on his upper left arm — was what confirmed his identity. The tattoo is a tribute to the Haida people, an Indigenous Canadian community renowned for their artistry and seamanship.

Since resigning earlier this year, Trudeau has largely kept a low profile, but his new romance with Perry has thrust him back into the limelight.
