During the latest episode of In Depth with Graham Besinger, the 71-year-old director revealed that he wanted to go to New Zealand because of the way the country handled the global epidemic that struck in 2020. He further noted that his first trip to New Zealand was in 1994. "I committed to myself.”

James Cameron recalled, “I'm going to come live here someday,” adding that he "just really fell in love with" the country and its people.

He added, "When Suzy and I were first getting serious, she said, 'Fine, no problem.' She was game. Now, later, we have children, we have a family, we've got roots in Malibu and Santa Barbara, that conversation had to be amended slightly, but we did say after Avatar, let's make this happen."

While still working on 2022's Avatar: The Way of Water, Cameron claimed to have spent a lot of time "going back and forth" in the years preceding the start of the COVID-19 epidemic in early 2020 after purchasing a farm in the area in 2011. The decision to "make the move as a family" was made in August of that year.

However, James Cameron proposed a hypothetical question and said, "Where would you rather live? A place that actually believes in science and is sane and where people can work together cohesively to a common goal, or a place where everybody's at each other's throats, extremely polarized, turning its back on science and basically would be in utter disarray if another pandemic appears."

He added, "I'm not there for scenery, I'm there for the sanity.”

Meanwhile, James Cameron has been married four times before tying the knot with Suzy in 2000. He shares an adult daughter, Josephine, from his past marriage to Terminator star Linda Hamilton.

Suzy also has a son named Jasper from a previous marriage to actor Sam Robards. The couple shares three kids together.
