James Cameron’s much-awaited sci-fi spectacle Avatar: Fire and Ash is all set to hit cinemas in India in a matter of hours, and the early signs at the box office are encouraging. The third installment of the globally celebrated Avatar franchise has sold approximately 1,65,000 tickets for its opening day across India’s top national cinema chains, PVR Inox and Cinepolis, highlighting strong interest among Indian moviegoers.
According to advance booking data, PVR Inox accounts for nearly 1,28,000 tickets, while Cinepolis has recorded around 37,000 admissions for Day 1.
What stands out is that the film’s sales are not heavily front-loaded. Instead, the bookings are well distributed across the opening weekend, indicating steady demand rather than a rush limited to the first day. In total, Avatar: Fire and Ash has already sold around 4,35,000 tickets in national chains for the opening weekend, a solid pre-release figure for a Hollywood release in India.
When compared to its predecessor, Avatar: The Way of Water, which sold about 3,30,000 tickets for the opening day alone, the numbers for Fire and Ash appear lower at first glance. However, market dynamics have evolved, and post-pandemic audience behavior shows stronger walk-ins and spot bookings, especially for large-scale visual spectacles. Among Hollywood releases in the post-pandemic era, Avatar: Fire and Ash has comfortably surpassed Black Panther: Wakanda Forever in advance sales and is on par with Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning.
Based on current pre-sales, audience buzz, and franchise pull, the James Cameron directorial is expected to open at around Rs. 20 crore in India. Given the franchise’s loyal fan base and its appeal among premium-format audiences such as IMAX and 3D, strong spot bookings are anticipated on the day of release. This could push the opening-day collections slightly beyond the Rs. 20 crore mark.
That said, the film faces stiff domestic competition from Dhurandhar, which is enjoying a sensational run at the Indian box office. Whether Avatar: Fire and Ash can dent Dhurandhar’s momentum remains to be seen. The coming days will reveal if James Cameron’s visual epic can carve out a dominant space amid intense box office competition.
