Thalapathy Vijay and director Venkat Prabhu's latest film The Greatest of All Time (GOAT) is making waves at the box office, maintaining strong momentum since its release on September 5. The spy thriller, which features Vijay in a dual role, is steadily inching towards the Rs 200 crore mark (nett) at the domestic box office, after an impressive start. Early reports of Sacnilk suggest that despite a minor dip, the film is holding strong and is expected to see a boost in collections over the upcoming weekend.
GOAT opened to a massive global release, raking in an astounding Rs 126 crore on its first day worldwide. Although the film's collections dropped slightly on September 11, pulling in around Rs 8 crore nett in India, its total domestic earnings for the first week have reached a solid Rs 170.75 crore. This comes despite the decline being its lowest figure so far, as weekend earnings are expected to revive the numbers.
The film's performance on September 11 saw the Tamil version record an overall occupancy of 27.80%, with evening and night shows contributing significantly at 37.86% and 30.99%, respectively. Directed by Venkat Prabhu, the film stars an ensemble cast, including Prashanth, Prabhudheva, Ajmal Ameer, Mohan, Jayaram, Sneha, Laila, and Meenakshi Chaudhary. Additionally, actors Trisha and Sivakarthikeyan make cameo appearances, adding to the star-studded appeal of the film.
Produced by AGS Entertainment with a hefty budget of Rs 380 crore, GOAT boasts a high-profile technical crew featuring composer Yuvan Shankar Raja, cinematographer Siddhartha Nuni, and editor Venkat Raajen.
Despite the film's initial success, GOAT's collections saw a decline after its extended opening weekend. By the first Wednesday, the film had slipped into single-digit earnings. After collecting Rs 44 crore on its first day—marking the best opening of 2024 for a Tamil title—GOAT struggled to sustain the same level of growth through the weekend, largely due to mixed audience reception.
Nonetheless, GOAT has already become the highest-grossing Tamil film of 2024, surpassing Kamal Haasan’s Indian 2, which underperformed at the box office. As it continues its theatrical run, GOAT is expected to cross the all-India nett collections of Ponniyin Selvan 2, which stood at Rs 181.96 crore, in the coming days. GOAT has also accumulated over Rs 325 crore globally, inching towards surpassing Ponniyin Selvan 2’s worldwide gross of Rs 344 crore.

In terms of Vijay’s filmography, GOAT has already overtaken the lifetime gross of four of his last five films, including Bigil (Rs 295 crore), Master (Rs 223 crore), Beast (Rs 216 crore), and Varisu (Rs 297 crore). However, the film is unlikely to surpass the box office record of Leo, Vijay’s collaboration with director Lokesh Kanagaraj, given its substantial production cost of over Rs 300 crore.
Despite these challenges, GOAT remains a significant success, and with weekend boosts anticipated, the film is well on track to secure its place as one of the highest-grossing Tamil films of the year.
