Filmmaker Zoya Akhtar has reportedly completed the first draft of a sequel to her cult 2011 road drama Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara, and discussions are underway to bring back the original lead cast, according to industry reports.
Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara 2 is expected to revisit the lives of the film’s iconic trio Hrithik Roshan, Farhan Akhtar and Abhay Deol, now older and at different stages in their personal and professional journeys.
According to a report in India Today, filmmaker Zoya Akhtar has locked the script’s first version and may position this as her next directorial project.
"Zoya has finally locked a draft she is happy with. She was always clear that a sequel to Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara would only happen if it had something new to say. It's not a nostalgic rehash; the film acknowledges the time elapsed and the changes that have taken place in the three men’s lives,’ the site quoted a source.
The original Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara, which followed three friends on a transformative road trip across Spain, became a defining film for an entire generation, celebrated for its themes of friendship, self-discovery and adventure.
Over the years, audiences and even cast members have publicly expressed interest in a follow-up that explores what the characters might be facing in later life.
While no official announcement has been made by the makers, reports suggest that negotiations are underway with Hrithik Roshan, Farhan Akhtar and Abhay Deol, to reprise their respective roles. The plan is for the sequel to address contemporary life challenges — possibly mid-life decisions, evolving friendships, and unfinished dreams that resonate with audiences familiar with the original.
Fans have speculated about the possibility of Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara 2 for years.
For now, the sequel remains in the developmental stage, with insiders indicating that Zoya Akhtar is focusing on giving the story a fresh emotional core before moving into full production. If it comes together, the film will mark a rare return for the beloved ensemble nearly 15 years after the original’s release.
