Farhan Akhtar and Ritesh Sidhwani-backed Boong has scripted history by winning the Best Children’s & Family Film award at the 79th British Academy Film Awards. Written and directed by Lakshmipriya Devi, the Manipuri-language film became the first Indian film ever to win a BAFTA in this category. Now, riding high on global recognition, the film is set for a theatrical re-release in India on March 6.
Farhan Akhtar announced the re-release on his official X handle, inviting audiences to watch what he described as a journey of innocence, love and resilience on the big screen once again. For a film that began as a heartfelt regional story, the moment marks a remarkable full-circle return to home audiences.
Boong had its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival in 2024, where it earned appreciation for its emotional storytelling and rooted narrative. After travelling across various international film festivals, the film was released in India on September 19 last year with a limited theatrical run in select cities through PVR Inox. Despite the modest release, it steadily built word-of-mouth acclaim.
Following the BAFTA win, Farhan shared a heartfelt note on Instagram, congratulating Lakshmipriya Devi and the entire cast and crew for creating what he called a beautiful and heartwarming film. He described witnessing Boong being honoured on the BAFTA stage as an unforgettable moment and thanked the jury, adding that the recognition means a great deal to dreamers and storytellers across India.
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter India, Lakshmipriya Devi revealed that there was no grand strategy behind the film’s global journey. Made in Manipuri, Boong was never envisioned as a big-budget commercial venture. She candidly stated that they were not making a Rs 100 crore film with carefully mapped-out plans. Instead, she described its success as a series of happy accidents, where they created the film and waited for the right platforms to discover it.
Starring Gugun Kipgen, Bala Hijam, Angom Sanamatum, and Vikram Kochhar among others, Boong tells the story of a young boy who sets out to find his father and bring him home as a gift for his mother. Produced by Excel Entertainment, Suitable Pictures, and Chalkboard Entertainment, the film’s re-release offers Indian audiences another chance to experience a historic cinematic milestone on the big screen.
