Veteran screenwriter Salim Khan, father of Bollywood star Salman Khan, has suffered a minor brain haemorrhage and is currently receiving intensive care at Lilavati Hospital in Mumbai.
The 90-year-old cinematic legend was rushed to the hospital’s emergency department early on Tuesday, February 17, after his personal physician noted a sudden spike in blood pressure that prompted immediate medical attention. Hospital officials confirmed that he was subsequently shifted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU).
Doctors at the Bandra-based hospital performed a procedure to stabilise his condition, and he was placed on ventilator support as a precaution while under close observation. According to the medical team, Salim Khan’s haemorrhage was minor, and although surgery was initially considered, it was put on hold as his condition stabilised following the procedure. Hospital staff indicated that if his recovery continues as expected, he could be taken off ventilator support soon. "He is stable and fine. If all is well, he will be taken off the ventilator by tomorrow," the statement further read. A formal health bulletin was scheduled to be issued with the family’s consent on Wednesday to provide further details.
A team comprising neurologists, cardiologists and other specialists has been overseeing his care, and the hospital has emphasised that further public updates will respect patient privacy and family wishes. Salim’s family — including Salman Khan, siblings Arbaaz Khan, Sohail Khan, Alvira Agnihotri and Arpita Khan Sharma — were reported to be at the hospital, offering support and staying by his side during this critical period.
Celebrities and colleagues from the film industry have also visited the veteran writer, with many fans sending prayers and best wishes on social media. Salim Khan is widely recognised for his legendary pairing with lyricist-screenwriter Javed Akhtar, crafting iconic Bollywood classics such as Sholay, Deewar, Zanjeer and Don in the 1970s and 1980s that reshaped Hindi cinema storytelling.
