The Delhi High Court heard the bail plea of Rajpal Yadav today after the actor surrendered in Tihar Jail on Feb 5 in the Rs 9 crore cheque bounce case.

The bail hearing is now scheduled to be heard on Monday, 16 February.

During the recent proceedings, counsel for Rajpal Yadav told the Delhi High Court that his client had been unable to get in touch with the actor despite repeated attempts.

The lawyer informed the bench that a bail application had already been filed and sought time to serve the response to the opposing side. He assured the court that he would return fully prepared with detailed submissions on the next date of hearing.

Justice Swarana Kanta Sharma took a stern view of the situation, noting that Rajpal Yadav had repeatedly assured the court that he would clear the dues but had not deposited any money.

The court observed that commitments were made several times without any concrete repayment. The bench questioned why, despite assurances to repay over Rs 3 crore, the matter had dragged on for years, with nearly 25–30 adjournments sought during various stages of the proceedings.

Rajpal Yadav’s emotional appeal

In an emotional appeal, Rajpal Yadav’s lawyer requested interim bail so that the actor could attend the wedding of his elder brother’s daughter.

As per Bar and Bench, the court remarked, “We may have sympathy for you, but the law is law. You did not surrender despite the court’s order… and only surrendered when the court issued the order again.”

The case, filed by Murli Projects Private Limited, dates back to 2010, when Rajpal Yadav and his wife, Radha Yadav, took a loan of Rs 5 crore to produce a film. He is to pay an amount of Rs 9 crore now.

The project did not do well commercially, and in 2018, a complaint was lodged alleging non-repayment of the amount. Since then, the matter has moved slowly through the legal system, marked by repeated hearings and adjournments.
