  • The film's OTT release drew global appreciation for its cast and emotional depth

Bollywood actress Kiara Advani has expressed admiration for Yami Gautam’s performance in the courtroom drama Haq, which recently began streaming on Netflix after its theatrical run.

Kiara Advani, who watched the film from home shortly after its OTT debut, took to her Instagram Story to commend Yami’s portrayal, writing: “Just finished watching Haq on Netflix @yamigautam what a stunning performance.” The message quickly garnered attention on social media, highlighting the respect and support among actors within the industry.

Haq, directed by Suparn Varma and produced by Junglee Pictures, is a courtroom drama inspired by the landmark Shah Bano case that addresses issues of justice, women’s rights and legal reform. The film was originally released in theatres on 7 November 2025 and is led by Yami Gautam as Shazia Bano, a woman fighting for her legal rights after abandonment by her husband, played by Emraan Hashmi.

After the film began streaming on Netflix from 2 January 2026, it found a wider audience beyond its theatrical viewership, prompting both critics and peers to revisit the story and performances. Variety in viewer reactions and ongoing discussions on social media pointed to the emotional depth and nuanced performances delivered by the cast, especially by Gautam in the central role.

After Haq’s OTT premiere, director Suparn said in a statement, “Now that Haq is streaming on Netflix, I woke up to messages and DMs from people who watched it right at the midnight drop. Since then, my phone hasn’t stopped ringing. With Netflix, the film has reached audiences across the world, and the response has been truly overwhelming. People have been incredibly effusive in their appreciation not just for the film, but also for the writing and the performances by Emraan Hashmi and Yami. The emotional reactions I’ve received have been deeply moving.”

In an interview with Zoom, Suparn said, “There has been no backlash but only love. People are also happily surprised that this is a progressive film. It is a balanced film,” before adding, “Everyone who has seen the film so far, this is what has touched the heart. It taps deep within us. For me, that was paramount from day one. When you make a film, keeping in mind that there could be a controversy and think you can benefit from it, you give the right to controversy. When you make a film that seeks to engage the heart and is honest and earnest about it, the audience smells it.”
