Actor Samir Soni has reacted to a growing online conversation in which a new generation of viewers has re-evaluated his character from the 2003 family drama Baghban. The film, which originally starred Amitabh Bachchan and Hema Malini as an elderly couple, has long been remembered for its emotional portrayal of ageing parents and the neglect they face from their children.
In a viral Instagram Reel, a Gen Z content creator challenged the conventional interpretation of Baghban, suggesting that modern audiences see different motivations in the characters. Instead of viewing Sammer’s on-screen son Sanjay as cold or insensitive, the influencer argued that his behaviour was practical, considerate and emotionally aware in several key scenes.

The influencer highlighted moments such as Sanjay questioning his father’s financial planning and politely asking him to adjust his use of a noisy typewriter so his wife could rest. These scenes, the creator argued, show a level of sensitivity rather than neglect, prompting a fresh take on a character that was previously cast in a negative light.
Samir Soni responded to the reassessment by sharing the Reel on his official Instagram account and captioning it: “Finally some redemption after 20 years. Just love the new generation.” His reaction — noted for its humour and acceptance — reflects his amusement at the evolving cultural conversation around the film’s characters.
Baghban, directed by Ravi Chopra and produced by BR Films, remains one of Bollywood’s most discussed family dramas, loved by many for its emotional storyline and strong performances. The film’s narrative has traditionally emphasized the sacrifices of parents and the importance of respect within the family, themes that resonated strongly with audiences at the time of release.
Released in 2003, Baghban became one of Bollywood's most emotional family dramas. The film also featured Salman Khan, Mahima Chaudhry, Divya Dutta, Rimi Sen, and Paresh Rawal in supporting roles.
