As Ranveer Singh’s much-anticipated spy thriller Dhurandhar inches closer to release, its trailer has sparked heated discussions online, not just for its scale or star power, but for its graphic violence.

The film, which features intense action and a notably brutal torture sequence, has drawn mixed reactions from audiences. Haq director Suparn S Varma has now call out what he sees as a deep-rooted double standard.

Taking to X, Suparn wrote, “I’m just amazed by some of the chatter about the violence in #Dhurandhar the same viewers would have called it cinematic brilliance if this was in any other language or a Korean or Japanese film.”

The filmmaker further added, “It’s high time we started to celebrate Hindi cinema and its filmmaker’s with the same passion we celebrate all makers and films. Each filmmaker comes with his/her unique voice and identity and background & I have been left spellbound by the world and characters created by @AdityaDharFilms and his amazing team!”

Earlier, YouTuber and political commentator Dhruv Rathee had accused Aditya of glorifying extreme violence and compared the visuals to brutal ISIS propaganda videos. Taking to X on Tuesday, he wrote, “Aditya Dhar has truly crossed a limit of cheapness in Bollywood. The extreme violence, gore and torture shown in his latest film trailer is the equivalent of watching ISIS beheadings and calling it ‘entertainment’.”

Dhruv Rathee further accused the director of prioritising shock value and profit over social responsibility. “His lust for money is so unhinged that he is willingly poisoning the minds of the young generation, desensitizing them to gore and glorifying unimaginable torture,” he added.

The creator also urged the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) to scrutinise the film’s violent content. “This is the chance for Censor Board to show if have a bigger problem with people kissing or watching someone get skinned alive,” he posted, referencing the often-criticised inconsistency in censorship standards.

Directed, written, and produced by Uri: The Surgical Strike director Aditya Dhar, Dhurandhar is loosely based on the Lyari Gang Wars in Pakistan and the covert operations of Indian intelligence linked to the region. The gritty espionage drama brings together a powerful ensemble including Sanjay Dutt, R Madhavan, and Akshaye Khanna joining Ranveer Singh in what is being positioned as one of the year’s biggest theatrical releases. The film is slated to arrive in cinemas on December 5.
