In a concerning development for the Hindi film industry, actor Aayush Sharma, brother-in-law of Bollywood superstar Salman Khan, has reportedly received a threatening email that has triggered an official investigation by the Mumbai Crime Branch.

According to police sources, the email was sent to Sharma on Wednesday (February 11) through ProtonMail, an encrypted email service known for masking sender identities. In the message, the sender allegedly invoked links to the Lawrence Bishnoi gang, a notorious criminal group previously associated with high-profile threats in the film industry.

Officials say the identity and location of the sender remain unknown, with investigators facing challenges due to the use of privacy-oriented digital tools. The Mumbai Crime Branch’s cyber unit is reportedly working to trace the origin of the email and determine whether it represents a genuine threat or is the handiwork of an individual mischief-maker exploiting the gang’s name.

The incident has heightened security concerns in Bollywood, coming just days after another threat was made to famed actor Ranveer Singh via a WhatsApp voice note, in which the sender allegedly demanded crores of rupees and claimed links to the same gang. Police increased security at Singh’s residence following that incident, which itself followed a firing incident outside the home of filmmaker Rohit Shetty earlier this month.

In response to the spate of threats, the Federation of Western India Cine Employees (FWICE) has written to Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, seeking an urgent meeting to address what it described as a “growing climate of fear” affecting shooting schedules, production planning and overall industry morale. The federation urged government intervention to ensure the safety of film and television professionals.

So far, no formal FIR specific to Sharma’s case has been publicly confirmed, though the family is cooperating with law enforcement. As investigations continue, authorities have stressed that all leads are being pursued to safeguard those in the entertainment fraternity.
