Tamil cinema veteran Bharathiraja is currently in a stable condition after being hospitalised in Chennai due to a severe lung infection. The 84-year-old filmmaker was admitted to MGM Healthcare, Aminjikkarai, a few days ago after experiencing breathlessness. Doctors have confirmed that while his condition has stabilised, he continues to receive treatment in the Critical Care Unit under close medical supervision.
According to a medical bulletin issued by the hospital on January 5, Bharathiraja was admitted with a severe lung infection and is undergoing comprehensive treatment for associated organ impairments. The statement noted that he is being closely monitored by a team of medical experts and is responding to the ongoing treatment. While his vital parameters remain within normal limits, doctors have advised continued care in the Critical Care Unit to ensure steady recovery.
An earlier bulletin released on Saturday, January 3, also provided reassurance regarding the filmmaker’s health. The statement said that Bharathiraja was admitted following complaints of breathlessness and was receiving appropriate medical care in the intensive care unit. It added that his clinical condition was stable, and with medical support, his vital signs were within normal limits. The hospital emphasised that he was responding satisfactorily to treatment and would remain under observation, with further updates to be shared as required.
The health update has drawn attention from fans and members of the film industry alike, many of whom have expressed concern and extended their wishes for his speedy recovery. Bharathiraja is widely regarded as one of the most influential filmmakers in Tamil cinema, known for redefining rural storytelling and introducing a new realism to mainstream films.
The past year has been an emotionally challenging one for the filmmaker. In 2025, Bharathiraja suffered a devastating personal loss when his son Manoj passed away at the age of 48 following a cardiac arrest.
