Veteran singer Asha Bhosle has recently shared her thoughts on the increasing divorce rates among young couples, expressing her concerns during a conversation with spiritual leader Ravi Shankar. The 91-year-old artist questioned why so many young people seem to fall out of love and get bored with each other so quickly these days.
Reflecting on her own experiences, Asha recounted her time with her late husband, the famous music composer RD Burman. "When I had issues with him, the most I did was go to my mother's house for a few days," she said. "But the thought of divorce never crossed my mind. I never divorced my husband.” This strong perspective highlights her belief in the importance of perseverance in relationships.
Asha further emphasized the alarming trend she observes today. “Nowadays, I hear about couples sending divorce papers every month. Why is this happening, Gurudev?” she asked Ravi Shankar. In response, he pointed out that Asha’s enduring passion for singing and her faith in God helped her navigate challenges. He noted, “You kept singing and made everyone happy. You also had faith in God and the strength to tolerate and deal with troubles.” Shankar remarked that today’s couples have much lower tolerance levels compared to previous generations.
Asha continued her reflections, stating, “I have spent most of my years in the film industry and seen many people, but earlier, they never used to take such drastic steps like the current generation does. I feel that the love between them ends very soon, and they get bored with each other quickly too.” She believes this rapid decline in love and connection is one of the main reasons behind the rise in divorces. Shankar agreed, adding that in modern times, “attraction supersedes love.”

Interestingly, Asha Bhosle herself experienced divorce in her early life. She married her first husband, Ganpatrao Bhosle, Lata Mangeshkar’s secretary, at the young age of 16. This marriage ended in divorce in 1960. However, she later found love with RD Burman, whom she married in 1980 and remained with until his death in 1994. Her journey through relationships has provided her with a unique perspective on love and commitment.
In the same discussion, Asha Bhosle also addressed women’s rights, particularly regarding the choice to opt out of pregnancy. “Nowadays, women think childbearing is a burden. It’s perhaps a reality in the lower strata of society, but even in the middle and higher classes,” she stated. Asha shared her own experience of balancing motherhood and her career. “I started working as a playback singer at the age of 10. During this time, I had three children, raised them, married them off, and now have grandchildren. I executed all the responsibilities successfully and single-handedly, without my husband,” she said, demonstrating her resilience and dedication.
Ravi Shankar acknowledged her efforts, calling her an “ideal” example for today’s women, illustrating how she managed her professional and personal life with grace and strength.
Throughout her illustrious career, Asha Bhosle has sung over 12,000 songs, ranging from energetic hits like “Piya Tu Ab To Aaja” to soulful ghazals such as “Dil Cheez Kya Hai.” Her diverse repertoire and enduring talent continue to inspire many, making her a beloved figure in the music industry. As she reflects on love, relationships, and the challenges of modern life, Asha’s insights resonate with many, urging a deeper understanding of commitment and personal choice.
