Narendra Modi is likely to take oath as the Prime Minister of India for the third-time on June 9, Sunday. Earlier, it was reported that the swearing-in ceremony would take place a day earlier.

On June 5, Modi tendered his resignation to President Droupadi Murmu, who accepted it and asked him to continue till the new government assumes office.

Modi's oath taking ceremony will be a star-studded affair as many foreign leaders are on the guest list. These include Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, Sri Lankan President Ranil Wickremesinghe, Nepal premier Pushpa Kamal Dahal, among others. While the official confirmation on the date and time is still awaited, a report by news agency ANI indicated that the swearing-in ceremony may take place on June 9 at 6 pm.

In the recently concluded Lok Sabha polls, the BJP could not get a majority on its own. However, BJP-led NDA secured 293 seats in the 543-member House, paving the way for Modi to take the oath for a third consecutive term.

The opposition INDIA bloc made impressive gains this time by bagging 234 seats, with the Congress almost doubling its tally from 2019.

Reportedly, the NDA MPs will meet on June 7 to formally elect Modi as their leader and the alliance leaders will then meet the President of India to submit their letters of support.
