Why Kerala is important in Lok Sabha polls?

For the upcoming Lok Sabha polls, Congress' focus will be on Kerala once again as it is among the few states where the grand old party still has a massive presence. Moreover, the party's leader Rahul Gandhi is expected to contest from the Wayanad constituency of the state yet again, which he currently represents in the lower house. Kerala has 20 parliamentary seats. Recently, Congress-led United Democratic Fund (UDF) announced the seat-sharing formula for the upcoming Lok Sabha polls. Under this, the Congress will on contest 16 seats, the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) will contest on two seats, Kerala Congress and Revolutionary Socialist Party will contest on one seat each. It may be noted that in the 2019 general elections, the Congress-led UPA bagged 19 out of 20 seats while the BJP-led NDA went empty handed. The party will once again look at achieving a majority in the state with the support of the newly formed INDIA bloc. As for the BJP led-NDA government, it is hoping to end the electoral drought. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been making frequent visits to the state over the last two months. Sandeep Vachasapathi, state spokesperson of the Kerala BJP, has expressed confidence in the party’s prospects, citing increased focus from the central leadership and growing acceptance of Modi among Keralites. Vachasapathi claimed that Modi’s appeal is transcending religious and sectarian lines. The BJP functionary expressed confidence in Modi’s appeal, claiming that minorities in Kerala, a significant portion of the population, will support him due to his universal acceptance and non-sectarian image.
