Chhattisgarh Lok Sabha elections 2024

Chhattisgarh is set to witness a fierce political contest between the BJP and Congress in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. The state sends 11 members to the Lok Sabha and has been traditionally dominated by the two mainstream parties.

The Lok Sabha results from Chhattisgarh will be keenly watched since they will come just months after power changed hands in the state from the Congress and BJP. The results of the Chhattisgarh assembly elections defied expectations of many analysts and poll pundits, who predicted that the Bhupesh Baghel-led Congress government will retain its grip on power. However, the BJP wrested power from Congress, winning 54 seats in the 90-member assembly.

The BJP is now hopeful of sustaining its winning momentum after the recent assembly election boost. The Congress is hoping to regain lost ground and improve its performance in the state.

Past results

In both 2014 and 2019, the BJP fared exceedingly well in Chhattisgarh, corning a lion’s share of the seats.

In 2014, the saffron party won 10 out of the 11 seats in Chhattisgarh and secured a vote share of nearly 49%. The Congress won just one seat.

In 2019, when the Congress was in power in Chhattisgarh, the BJP again posted a stellar performance. It won 9 seats while the Congress improved its seat tally to 2. However, the BJP improved its vote share in 2019 to nearly 51%.

What to expect

In its first list of candidates, BJP has named four new faces for Chhattisgarh with an eye on winnability. Various opinion polls have already predicted a handsome margin for the BJP in the Lok Sabha elections.

Congress is staring at a formidable challenge after its recent loss in the assembly elections. Nevertheless, the grand old party is planning to go all guns blazing in the state amid buzz that former chief minister Bhupesh Baghel may enter the Lok Sabha poll fray.
