Bharatiya Janata Party’s Alok Sharma has defeated INC’s Arun Srivastava in the Bhopal Lok Sabha constituency. Sharma amassed 9,811,09 votes whereas Srivastava got 4,79,610 votes. The victory margin for Sharma was over 5 lakh votes.
Bhopal, the capital of Madhya Pradesh, has been a bastion of the BJP and Sharma's victory has ensured that it will remain so. The saffron party has retained Bhopal seat since 1991 Lok Sabha elections.
In the 2019 Lok Sabha polls, BJP’s Pragya Thakur won a high-profile contest against INC candidate and former CM Digvijay Singh. Thakur defeated Singh with a margin of close to 3.6 lakh votes.
In the 2014 elections, BJP’s Alok Sankar defeated INC’s PC Sharma. Sanjar emerged victorious with 714,178 votes whereas Sharma got 343, 482 votes.
Bhopal went to polls on May 7 during the third phase of the 2024 elections. The voter turnout in the capital of Madhya Pradesh was 64.06%.
