National Unity Day 2025: India observes Rashtriya Ekta Diwas, also known as National Unity Day, every year on October 31 to mark the birth anniversary of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, the Iron Man of India. The day honours his unmatched role in uniting the country after independence and promoting the idea of unity in diversity.
The year 2025 holds special significance as it marks Sardar Patel’s 150th birth anniversary. To commemorate the occasion, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will take part in the National Unity Day celebrations at Ekta Nagar, Kevadia, Gujarat, home to the Statue of Unity, the world’s tallest statue dedicated to Sardar Patel.
History of Rashtriya Ekta Diwas
The Government of India introduced Rashtriya Ekta Diwas in 2014 to pay tribute to Sardar Patel’s vision and his contribution to the nation’s political integration. The day reminds citizens of the importance of maintaining the sovereignty, integrity and security of the country.
During the 2015 celebration, Prime Minister Modi announced the ‘Ek Bharat Shreshtha Bharat’ initiative, aimed at promoting cultural exchange and mutual understanding between people of different states and regions. Since then, schools, colleges, government offices and youth organisations across India have observed the day through activities such as debates, exhibitions, unity pledges and marches.
Theme of National Unity Day 2025
The theme for 2025 is “Ek Bharat, Aatmanirbhar Bharat”. It connects the spirit of unity with the idea of self-reliance, aligning with India’s vision of becoming a Viksit Bharat (Developed India) by 2047. The theme reflects both Sardar Patel’s dream of a united nation and modern India’s goal of building collective strength for progress.
The message behind this year’s theme is that true unity is not only about geographical or political integration but also about economic and social self-reliance. It encourages citizens to work together towards a strong and independent India, built on cooperation and shared national identity.
Celebrations Across the Country
Every year, the day is marked by activities like the Run for Unity and Unity March, organised in schools, universities and government departments. These events aim to inspire patriotism and remind people of their duty to uphold the nation’s integrity.
At Ekta Nagar, cultural performances, exhibitions, and youth events highlight Sardar Patel’s life and vision. The celebrations promote a sense of belonging among citizens and encourage younger generations to carry forward his ideals.
Significance of the Day
Sardar Patel’s leadership was crucial in uniting over 560 princely states into one nation after independence. His vision turned diversity into India’s greatest strength. National Unity Day serves as a reminder of his determination and the continued importance of unity in safeguarding the nation’s progress.
