A man from Greater Noida, seen in a video assaulting his wife and later arrested for allegedly setting her on fire, suggested on social media that she died by suicide. The woman, Nikki, succumbed to burn injuries on Thursday.
According to NDTV, videos show her being thrashed and her hair pulled by her husband, Vipin, and another woman at their house in Sirsa. Other clips show Nikki engulfed in flames, limping down stairs, and later sitting on the floor with severe burn injuries.
Nikki’s elder sister, Kanchan, who is married to Vipin’s elder brother, alleged that both sisters were tortured for dowry, and their in-laws demanded Rs 36 lakh. “The torture began soon after their marriage in 2016. That same evening, they brutally assaulted my sister in front of me and the children. They then threw some liquid on her and set her ablaze in front of my eyes. I tried to save her, but I could not… I want justice. I want my in-laws to suffer the way they made my sister suffer,” Kanchan told NDTV.
She also alleged that she was assaulted between 1.30 am and 4 am on Thursday. “They told me it would be better if I was dead,” she said.
Nikki’s son corroborated the allegations, saying, “They poured something on mumma, slapped her and then set her ablaze using a lighter.”
Hours before his arrest, Vipin, whose Instagram bio describes him as an advocate, posted an Instagram story suggesting Nikki had taken her own life. With a mournful song playing in the background, he wrote: “Why didn’t you tell me what had happened? Why did you leave me? Why did you do this? The world is calling me a killer, Nikki.” He added, “Mere saath bahut galat ho raha hai tere jaane ke baad (I am being wronged since you left).”
Another Instagram story showed a smiling Nikki with Vipin and their son, captioned: “Main barbaad ho gaya (I am devastated). I am left with nothing.”
According to NDTV, police have named Vipin’s parents and brother in the murder case and are currently searching for them.
