Panic gripped passengers inside a Mumbai Metro coach after smoke entered it due to a fire in a private bus near Devipada Metro Station on the Western Express Highway in the Borivali area on Tuesday afternoon, Hindustan Times reported.
A video of passengers suffocating, coughing, and covering their faces after smoke entered the coach has gone viral on social media, sparking concerns about safety on the city’s driverless metro system.

As per the report, the bus, which was parked on the road beside the Devipada metro station, suddenly caught fire when the metro stopped. Following this, the smoke entered the coach, making it difficult for passengers to breathe.
The bus was empty when it caught fire, the report added. The metro staff and firefighters rushed to the spot and doused the flames. No casualties were reported due to the incident.
As per the report, a video of the incident was shared on X by a user named Yogesh Namjoshi. In the video, a metro coach is seen filled with thick smoke as people cough and feel suffocated. Most had their faces covered with handkerchiefs and masks to avoid inhaling smoke.

Reacting to the incident, the Maha Mumbai Metro Operation Corporation Ltd expressed regret over the incident and added that there was no fire or hazard inside the train, the report added.
“We regret the inconvenience caused to our valued passengers,” the metro operator was quoted by HT.
“Due to the station’s open design, smoke briefly reached the platform and entered one coach when doors opened. The situation was promptly managed at the next station. There was no fire or hazard inside the train. Metro services continued safely and uninterrupted. We thank commuters for their patience and understanding,” it added.
