Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate Phase 1 of the Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA) on Wednesday, marking a major milestone in India’s aviation journey. The project is expected to ease congestion at Mumbai’s existing airport and boost the city’s capacity as a global air hub.

Second international airport for Mumbai

NMIA is India’s largest Greenfield airport project, built under a Public–Private Partnership (PPP) model and developed at a cost of Rs 19,650 crore. It will operate along with Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA), making Mumbai one of the few cities in the world with two international airports.

Design and capacity

Spread across 1,160 hectares, the airport is developed to handle 90 million passengers annually and 3.25 million metric tonnes of cargo once fully operational.

The airport will feature an Automated People Mover (APM) system to connect all four terminals and a landside APM for city-side access, ensuring seamless travel within the airport complex.

Sustainable and future-ready

The airport has been designed with a strong focus on sustainability. It will include dedicated storage for Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF), solar power generation of 47 MW, and electric bus services for eco-friendly transport.

It will also be India’s first airport connected by Water Taxi, offering an innovative and green travel option.

Strategic importance

NMIA will significantly enhance Mumbai’s connectivity, reduce air traffic pressure at CSMIA, and improve logistics and passenger experience.

The airport is designed with modern, passenger-friendly amenities to ensure smooth transit and integrate seamlessly with existing and upcoming transport infrastructure, including metro lines, road networks, and other public transport systems.
