  • Magenta Line to be Delhi Metro's longest at 76.6 km after new extension
  • New 9.9 km underground line adds 9 stations, enhancing Central Vista access.
  • Magenta Line will host 31 underground stations, the highest in the network

In a significant expansion of the capital’s rapid transit network, the Magenta Line is poised to become the Delhi Metro’s longest corridor, surpassing the Pink Line. This follows the Union Cabinet’s recent approval for a crucial new underground stretch, according to details provided by the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC).

The newly sanctioned 9.9-kilometre section will run from Ramakrishna Ashram Marg to Indraprastha, featuring nine completely underground stations. This extension, classified as part of Phase VA, will increase the total operational length of the Magenta Line to 76.6 kilometres.

This will edge out the Pink Line, which will measure nearly 72 kilometres upon the completion of its own Phase IV extension from Majlis Park to Maujpur in the coming months, as per a TOI report.

The DMRC emphasised that the new corridor would extend the existing Magenta Line — which currently runs from Krishna Park Extension to Botanical Garden and has an under-construction section to RK Ashram — further east to Indraprastha. This expansion will notably provide direct metro connectivity to the Central Vista area for the first time.

Stations on the new stretch include RK Ashram Marg, Shivaji Stadium, Central Secretariat, Kartavya Bhawan, India Gate, War Memorial-High Court, Baroda House, Bharat Mandapam and Indraprastha.

The line will create vital new interchanges with the Yellow and Violet Lines at Central Secretariat, the Blue Line at Indraprastha and the Airport Express Line at Shivaji Stadium. It will also serve key landmarks such as the Yuge Yugeen Bharat Museum, the Supreme Court, Patiala House Court and the National Green Tribunal.

A DMRC official stated that a dedicated subway is planned between Rajiv Chowk and Shivaji Stadium stations. This link is intended to facilitate direct passenger interchange from the Airport Line to the bustling Rajiv Chowk station on the Blue Line and is expected to help decongest the latter hub.

Upon completion, the Magenta Line will also claim another record within the network: it will host the highest number of underground stations. The line will contain 31 subterranean stops, overtaking the Yellow Line, which currently holds the record with 20.

The extension is part of the broader Phase IV and Phase VA expansions of the Delhi Metro. As reported by TOI, six new corridors spanning 112.4 kilometres with 94 new stations were originally planned under Phase IV. Three of these — the Majlis Park-Maujpur corridor, the RK Ashram Marg-Janakpuri West corridor and the new Aerocity–Tughlakabad ‘Golden Line’ — are slated to open within this year.

The recent Cabinet approval also covered two other corridors under Phase VA: a link from Tughlaqabad to Kalindi Kunj and another from Aerocity to Terminal 1.

These projects, alongside the approved Inderlok-Indraprastha, Rithala-Narela-Kundli and Saket G Block-Lajpat Nagar extensions, underscore a period of substantial growth for the capital’s metro system, aiming to enhance connectivity and reduce urban congestion.
