New Delhi, February 8: Delhi has emerged as the country’s leader in electric public transport after adding 500 new electric buses to its fleet, taking the total number of e-buses operating in the capital to 4,286, according to ANI. With this, Delhi has overtaken Maharashtra, which currently operates 4,001 electric buses.
Official data shows Karnataka follows with 1,989 electric buses, while Gujarat has 1,041, Telangana 875 and Uttar Pradesh 874. The latest expansion positions Delhi as the state with the largest electric bus fleet in India and strengthens its push towards green mobility and cleaner urban transport.
Chief Minister Rekha Gupta said the milestone reflects the Delhi government’s long-term policy to modernise and make public transport environmentally friendly and more accessible. Over the past year, the Delhi Transport Corporation has steadily inducted electric buses, a move the government says has contributed to lower pollution levels and safer, more comfortable and affordable travel for commuters.
Gupta added that the government’s focus goes beyond increasing numbers and is aimed at improving connectivity, promoting zero-emission transport and building a future-ready mobility system for the capital.
Speaking at an event marking one year of the BJP-led Delhi government, Gupta also praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership and highlighted the role of women in governance. During the ceremony, Gupta along with BJP National President Nitin Nabin flagged off a large fleet of electric buses, calling it a major step for both urban mobility and “women-led development”.
