The arrest of 72-year-old occultist Kamruddin in connection with the deaths of three people in a car near the Peeragarhi flyover has opened up a trail of his crimes spread across multiple states. Police say Kamruddin is not a one-time offender but a habitual criminal who used claims of “mystical powers” to cheat, exploit and allegedly kill people. He was out on bail in another murder case.
According to the police, the accused poisoned his victims using laddoos laced with toxic substances, a method he is suspected to have used earlier as well. He had promised the victims to convert their Rs 2 lakh into Rs 3 crore through supernatural powers.
A ‘godman’ with a deadly past
Police describe Kamruddin as a shadowy figure who operated for years in Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan, posing as a healer and occult practitioner. Living in Ghaziabad’s Loni area, he allegedly practised black magic for over a decade and attracted people by claiming he could solve any problem, from illness to financial trouble.
According to the police, visiting cards recovered from him advertised solutions to “all kinds of difficulties”. Many people approached him believing he had supernatural powers.
However, police say what initially appeared to be harmless superstition soon turned into a pattern of manipulation, extortion and violence.
UP killings and poisoned ‘rituals’
One of the key cases linked to Kamruddin dates back to May last year in Uttar Pradesh’s Firozabad district. Two men, Ramnath and his relative Pooran, were allegedly killed after they came in contact with the occultist.
As per a complaint filed by Ramnath’s brother, Kamruddin convinced the two men that he could solve their problems through ritualistic magic. He allegedly took money from Ramnath in exchange for these services.
When Ramnath later demanded his money back, Kamruddin invited the two men to his house on May 8, claiming they would receive “hidden treasure” through special rituals. Police believe the men were given a poisonous substance there.
Their bodies were found the next morning in a narrow lane. Items linked to occult practices, laddoos, glass objects and ceremonial material, were recovered from the spot. Police suspect Kamruddin cheated them of nearly Rs 5 lakh.
How Kamruddin targeted people?
A senior police officer said Kamruddin targeted people’s desperation and desire for quick wealth. While some approached him for health-related issues, others were drawn by promises of sudden riches.
“He would talk about ‘dhanvarsha’ or showers of wealth and perform tricks using shawls to make it look like money was appearing magically. This was all an illusion meant to trap people,” the officer was quoted by TOI as saying.
Police say once victims were emotionally or financially trapped, Kamruddin would control them, often demanding large sums of money.
Recent Peeragarhi triple death
In the recent Peeragarhi case, three people were found dead inside a parked car, with police detecting a poisonous smell. Kamruddin was arrested soon after and booked under Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) sections related to murder and poisoning.
One of the victims, Randhir, 78, was a well-known property dealer from Baprola. His family described him as financially secure and generous. He earned substantial rental income and owned valuable property. The family was preparing to inaugurate a newly constructed building worth around Rs 5 crore later this month.
Investigators are still probing how Randhir and the other victims came in contact with Kamruddin.
More cases under scanner
Police say Kamruddin’s criminal history goes back to at least 2014, when he allegedly murdered a woman in Rajasthan’s Dholpur district. He is now being investigated for possible involvement in at least five other murder cases.
A father of seven, Kamruddin remains in custody as police piece together his movements and contacts.
