A 63-year-old man with co-morbidities and who tested positive for Covid-19 died at a private hospital here, taking the coronavirus-related death toll in the state to four, officials said on Saturday.

He was admitted to a private hospital in Bengaluru Urban (Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike limits) on May 21 after he complained of weakness and died on May 29, they said.

According to the health department statement, the elderly patient who was fully vaccinated was on post operative chemotherapy and had co-morbidities like pulmonary TB with squamous cell carcinoma of buccal mucosa.

India is currently experiencing a concerning increase in Covid-19 cases, with active infections reaching 3,395 as of May 31, 2025. This represents a fivefold rise from just a week earlier, when the active case count was slightly above 1,000.

Given the current COVID-19 situation in the state and the reopening of schools in June, the Karnataka Health Department has issued a circular asking government and private schools to take precautions in the interest of school children's health.

The instructions came following a Covid-19 situation review meeting held by the Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on May 26.

The instructions are as follows: If schoolchildren develop fever, cough, cold, and other symptoms, do not send them to school. Follow appropriate treatment and care measures as advised by the doctor.

Children should be sent to school only after the symptoms have completely resolved.

A 60-year-old woman who tested positive for COVID-19 has died in Delhi, officials said on Saturday.

This is the first fatality in the capital amid the current surge in cases.

According to official data, Delhi has 294 active COVID-19 cases.

"The woman was suffering from acute intestinal obstruction post-laparotomy. The COVID-19 finding was incidental," an official said.

A 51-year-old man has tested positive for COVID-19 in Arunachal Pradesh, bringing the total number of infections in the ongoing wave to three, a senior health official said on Saturday. The individual underwent a rapid antigen test at Ramakrishna Mission Hospital (RKMH) in Itanagar on May 28, which confirmed the infection.

State Surveillance Officer Dr. Lobsang Jampa stated that the state had previously reported two cases of the new COVID-19 variant on May 27.

The minister clarified that the death was linked to comorbidities, particularly tuberculosis, and that the current variant in circulation resembles the common flu.

"So far, 54 cases have been reported, and one death has occurred. However, the patient was severely affected by tuberculosis. As of now, only one patient is admitted to SMS Hospital--a child infected with the Omicron variant, which is not very serious. It presents symptoms similar to the common flu. There is no cause for concern at the moment. There's no significant spread at the moment, but people are still advised to take necessary precautions," Singh told ANI.

The deceased, who was admitted to the hospital on May 15 died on May 25, they said.

According to a statement by the health department, the patient died due to septic shock with MODS (Multiple Organ Dysfunction Syndrome), AKI (Acute Kidney Injury) with oliguria, Covid pneumonia with ARDS (Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome) and Hyponatremia.

As COVID-19 cases witness a gradual uptick, the Union Minister of State for Health and AYUSH (Independent Charge), Prataprao Jadhav, on Friday assured that the Centre is fully prepared to handle any situation that may arise.

"Both our Central Health Department and the AYUSH Ministry are fully alert and closely monitoring the situation across all states. We have spoken with the respective Health and AYUSH Secretaries, as well as other concerned ministers," Jadhav told ANI.

Two persons have tested positive for Covid-19 in Mizoram, seven months after the last such case was reported in the state, health department officials said.

The patients are undergoing treatment at Zoram Medical College and Hospital (ZMCH) in Falkawn near Aizawl, they said.

Mizoram reported the last Covid-19 case in October 2024 during which 73 people had contracted the virus in the state.

As many as 84 new COVID-19 cases were reported in Maharashtra on Friday, taking the tally of cases registered since the start of the year to 681, the state public health department said.

Most of the patients have mild symptoms and people should not panic, it said in a release here.

Of the new cases, 32 were detected in Mumbai, two in Thane district, 14 in Thane Municipal Corporation limits, one in Navi Mumbai, one in Kalyan-Dombivli Municipal Corporation, two in Raigad district, one in Panvel, one in Nashik city, one in Pune district, 19 in Pune Municipal Corporation, three in Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation, two in Satara, one in Kolhapur district, one in Kolhapur Municipal Corporation, and three in Sangli Municipal Corporation limits, the department said.

Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan on Thursday said a small number of Covid cases have been reported from the state, but there was no need to be concerned as testing and treatment facilities, including medicines, oxygen and ICU beds, have been ensured.

The CM, at a press conference here, said that the total number of active Covid in the state was 727 and the majority of them were in Kottayam, Ernakulam, Thiruvananthapuram, Pathanamthitta and Alappuzha districts.

He said it was the Omicron JN variant LF7, which has been reported in South-East Asian countries, that has been found in Kerala.

In Karnataka, an elderly man who tested positive for Covid-19 died at a hospital in Belagavi district, a senior official in the health department said.

The patient, a 70-year-old man, died due to acute cardiorespiratory arrest with encephalopathy and late-onset seizures associated with diabetes, hypertension, IHD and positive status.
