  • Woman severely injured in Rottweiler attack during morning walk in Bengaluru
  • Victim underwent 8-hour surgery; owner booked for negligence after FIR filed
  • Incident sparks debate on pet owner responsibility and leash law enforcement

A routine morning walk near her home in Bengaluru’s HSR Layout’s Teachers’ Colony on January 26 descended into a brutal mauling for Shalini Kumari Dubey, a 31-year-old working professional and mother.

The attack, allegedly by a neighbour’s unleashed and unmuzzled Rottweiler, has left the young mother with profound physical and psychological scars, her life violently disrupted.

CCTV footage of the incident shows the powerful dog charging at Shalini the moment its owner opened the gate. “If the pet owner could not control such a large dog, it should never have been allowed to roam freely. Pet owners are responsible for following safety norms, including using a leash and muzzle, especially in public areas,” said her husband, Satya Prakash Dubey.

The dog lunged, pinning her to the ground and savaging her face and neck. The injuries were severe. Shalini endured nearly eight hours of surgery, requiring over 80 stitches across her face, throat and head. Doctors noted one deep, 7cm gash came perilously close to her airway.

“Another centimetre and it could have been fatal. As per doctors, the scars on her face and body will remain for life,” Dubey recounted. While she survives, medical professionals have warned that some facial scarring may be permanent.

Yet, the trauma extends far beyond her own wounds. Hospitalised for over a week, Shalini is grappling with flashbacks and anxiety and has begun consultations with a clinical psychologist. Her deepest anguish, however, centres on her 17-month-old daughter. “She keeps asking for her mother,” said Dubey. “At night, she cries inconsolably.” Shalini reportedly fears her facial injuries may affect her toddler’s ability to recognise her.

The attack has shattered the family’s daily life. With Shalini incapacitated, their child is being cared for by grandmothers and has lost nearly a kilogramme in weight. The infant has been unable to breastfeed since the incident. Both parents have been unable to work and a pervasive fear of dogs now grips the household.

The incident has reignited urgent questions about pet owner accountability and the enforcement of leash laws. Neighbours told were cited by TOI as saying that the dog had displayed prior aggression, with Dubey citing a previous attack on a delivery executive.

Following a medico-legal report from the hospital, police registered a First Information Report (FIR) against the dog’s owner, N Amaresh Reddy, for negligence. A senior officer reportedly confirmed that a legal notice has been served and that Reddy appeared before police the day after the case was filed. Investigations are ongoing and he will be required to appear again.
