A 27-year-old bank employee's lunchtime errand turned fatal on Monday when a speeding motorcycle struck her as she crossed Bengaluru’s Rajajinagar, with the young woman succumbing to her injuries hours later.

Yogeshwari, a resident of Kempegowda Layout in Laggere, was employed at a private sector bank located on the busy thoroughfare. The incident occurred around 1 pm outside her workplace at Dr Rajkumar Road, where she and colleagues routinely crossed the road to purchase meals from an eatery opposite the bank.

According to police, Yogeshwari was holding a lunch packet while crossing when the speeding Bullet motorcycle, ridden by 21-year-old Deepak from Ulsoor, collided with her with tremendous force.

An investigating officer reportedly said that Yogeshwari and her colleagues frequently bought lunch from the establishment across the road and on Monday she was crossing while carrying her food when Deepak, a student, struck her while riding at high speed.

Witness accounts suggest a moment of tragic misjudgement preceded the collision. Police reports indicate that a colleague who was crossing alongside Yogeshwari noticed the oncoming motorcycle and stopped midway. Yogeshwari, however, reportedly believed she could safely make it across and continued — a decision that proved fatal.

The impact threw both onto the asphalt. Yogeshwari sustained grievous head injuries, while Deepak also suffered head trauma. They were rushed to a nearby private hospital, where Yogeshwari was declared dead around 9 pm despite medical efforts to save her.

Deepak remains hospitalised and is undergoing treatment for his injuries. Authorities have registered a case of causing death due to negligence against him at the Rajajinagar Traffic Police station.

Police said that they will record Deepak's statement once he has recovered sufficiently from his injuries, indicating that further investigation will follow upon the rider's discharge from medical care.
