A 27-year-old software professional died by suicide at her residence in north-west Bengaluru, allegedly distressed over an astrologer's grim prediction about her marriage. The incident occurred on Friday in the MEI Layout area of Bagalagunte.

The deceased has been identified as Vidyajyoti. Police officials stated that the woman, who worked in the tech industry, was found hanging from a ceiling fan in her room.

According to a preliminary inquiry by the Bagalagunte police, who have registered a case of unnatural death, the tragedy unfolded against a backdrop of familial consent and astrological fear.

Law enforcement sources reportedly revealed that Vidyajyoti was in a relationship with a man from a different caste. In a departure from the often-cited conflicts surrounding inter-caste unions, both families had reportedly given their consent to the marriage, honouring the woman's wishes.

However, the family's path to the wedding recently took a detour through the consultation of an astrologer. A senior police officer, citing the initial investigation, stated that the woman's parents sought an astrologer's counsel regarding their daughter's future.

The seer allegedly predicted a troubled horizon for the couple, forecasting significant misunderstandings two years into the marriage that could potentially culminate in separation, news agency PTI reported.

To neutralise this predicted marital discord, the astrologer is said to have advised the family to perform a specific nine-day ritual. The family reportedly undertook the religious observance in earnest.

The situation took a fatal turn on the ninth and final day of the ritual. Police said that Vidyajyoti, whose state of mind appeared to have been severely affected by the astrologer's prophecy, retreated to her room. In the absence of her parents, she allegedly ended her life by hanging.

The grim discovery was made in the evening. When Vidyajyoti failed to respond to repeated knocking, her father was forced to break open the door, only to find her body hanging from the ceiling fan.

The Bagalagunte police have filed an Unnatural Death Report (UDR) and are conducting further investigations to piece together the exact circumstances that led to the extreme step.
