To neutralise this predicted marital discord, the astrologer is said to have advised the family to perform a specific nine-day ritual. The family reportedly undertook the religious observance in earnest.

The situation took a fatal turn on the ninth and final day of the ritual. Police said that Vidyajyoti, whose state of mind appeared to have been severely affected by the astrologer's prophecy, retreated to her room. In the absence of her parents, she allegedly ended her life by hanging.

The grim discovery was made in the evening. When Vidyajyoti failed to respond to repeated knocking, her father was forced to break open the door, only to find her body hanging from the ceiling fan.

The Bagalagunte police have filed an Unnatural Death Report (UDR) and are conducting further investigations to piece together the exact circumstances that led to the extreme step.
