At least 12 people have died and over 6.3 lakh people have been affected as floods continue to wreak havoc in several parts of Assam and the surrounding areas. Rescue teams have been able to help several families in flood-hit areas and have shifted them to makeshift tents for now.
Seven rivers, including the Brahmaputra, were reported as flowing above the danger level. The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) in Guwahati predicted heavy to very heavy rainfall at isolated places in Assam in the coming time.
The prediction by RMC said that Dhubri, South Salmara-Mankachar, Goalpara and Kokrajhar are likely to witness thunderstorms with lightning and gusty wind with a speed of 30-40 kmph.
"Heavy rain is taking place in several lower Assam districts since early morning. Many places in Barpeta, Bongaigaon, Nalbari, Goalpara and Baksa have been affected," an official of Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) said on the flood situation in the state.
PTI reported that Sribhumi is by far the worst-hit district with over 2 lakh people hit by rains, landslides and floods. Sribhumi is followed by Nagaon with at least 99,000 people affected and Cachar with at least 89,000 people affected.
223 relief camps are currently operational and are providing shelter to around 40,000 displaced people. Meanwhile, 288 relief distribution centres are also functional as of now.
