Andhra Pradesh's Bhogapuram Greenfield International Airport, boasting world-class infrastructure and several unique features, is gearing up to begin operations in June. From the floors and ceilings to the restrooms and baggage systems, every aspect of the terminal has been carefully designed with sustainability and environmental responsibility in mind.
Well before construction began, planners incorporated safeguards to help the airport withstand natural disasters like Cyclone Hudhud. The main terminal has been built to endure wind speeds of up to 275 kmph, while the Air Traffic Control (ATC) tower can withstand winds of up to 290 kmph. Even rainfall of up to 27 cm will not disrupt operations, as the facility is equipped to function smoothly in severe weather conditions.
The LEED-certified airport also features a 5-MW solar power system, supporting green-building practices that promote both safe and sustainable travel. Passenger movement has been streamlined from entry to check-in, with baggage travelling nearly 6 km through multiple security scans once it is tagged.
The terminal features a 20-metre-high ceiling to maximise natural light and ventilation. Cultural elements reflecting the heritage of Andhra Pradesh are showcased through a 120-metre digital display, while a 90-foot Etikoppaka toy structure — inspired by a flying-fish design — is also being installed. The airport has been named in honour of legendary freedom fighter Alluri Sitarama Raju, adding emotional and cultural significance.
Construction is progressing at a rapid pace, with more than 5,000 workers on site around the clock to ensure the airport is ready for launch by June.
