After Karur tragedy, Vijay's TVK stages high-security 'no-stage' rally in Erode

A party leader explained that this "no-stage" model was adopted after a successful trial in Puducherry, confirming that Vijay will speak from the bus before departing promptly.

In a decisive shift from its previous campaign style, the Tamilaga Vetri Kazhagam (TVK) will host its first major public meeting in Erode on Thursday, implementing stringent crowd-control measures crafted in the grim shadow of September’s fatal stampede in Karur.

The rally, addressed by party chief and actor Vijay, marks a pivotal moment for the nascent political outfit. It is not only its first large-scale gathering since the tragedy that claimed 41 lives but also its debut public event since inducting veteran leader K A Sengottaiyan, a significant catch from the AIADMK after 52 years.

As reported by Deccan Herald, his recruitment bolsters the TVK in the AIADMK-strong western region, where the BJP has also been making gradual inroads.

Gone is the party’s original template of roadshows. Instead, the meeting will be held within the controlled environment of a 32-acre plot owned by the Vijayapuri Amman Temple in Vijayapuram, situated on the Kochi-Bengaluru highway, between 11 am and 1 pm.

Organisers have reportedly planned the layout meticulously to prevent overcrowding. Approximately 60 enclosures have been created, each with a capacity for 400-500 standing attendees, with no seating provided.

A senior TVK leader was cited by Deccan Herald as saying that about 60 CCTV cameras are installed throughout the venue, with ambulances and medical teams on standby — a direct response to the Karur incident where a lack of water and facilities led to widespread dehydration.

In a notable departure from convention, no traditional stage will be erected. Vijay will address the crowd from atop his specially designed campaign bus, parked centrally within the grounds.

A party leader explained that this "no-stage" model was adopted after a successful trial in Puducherry, confirming that Vijay will speak from the bus before departing promptly. The leader also stated that cadres had been instructed to maintain discipline.

Regarding crowd management, the leader outlined the practical arrangements: attendees will be standing in designated enclosures without seating, while comprehensive surveillance and medical support are in place, including approximately 60 CCTV cameras and deployed ambulances with medical teams.

Police authorities have conducted a thorough inspection of the arrangements. District officials have mandated strict adherence to safety conditions, with an estimated 1,000 personnel slated for deployment to manage the anticipated crowds.

Acknowledging a persistent security concern, the party has issued a specific advisory urging Vijay’s supporters not to trail his vehicle on motorcycles and scooters — a common but hazardous practice among his fanbase — during his journey from Coimbatore to the venue and back.
