The 2024 multi-state Income Tax raids on a prominent tobacco business family have returned to public focus after a high-end Lamborghini crash in Kanpur allegedly involved Shivam Mishra, son of businessman KK Mishra. The accident has once again drawn attention to the financial investigations that had first brought Mishra into national headlines two years ago.

According to NDTV, the luxury car accident on Sunday afternoon left at least six people injured and triggered chaos near Rev-3 Mall in Kanpur’s Gwaltoli area. Police later named Shivam Mishra as the alleged driver after initially registering an FIR against “unknown persons”.

The 2024 income tax raids

Shivam Mishra had first come into the public eye in 2024 during extensive Income Tax Department searches on Banshidhar Tobacco Private Limited, a company headed by his father KK Mishra.

The raids were conducted across nearly 20 locations in Kanpur, Delhi, Mumbai and Gujarat, with multiple teams operating simultaneously.

Officials had alleged significant discrepancies between the company’s declared annual income of around Rs 20–25 crore and an estimated turnover ranging between Rs 100–150 crore. Investigators suspected potential income tax evasion and Goods and Services Tax violations, along with the possibility of offshore accounts and manipulated financial records. Detailed outcomes of those proceedings have not been publicly updated since the searches.

The 2026 Kanpur crash

The incident occurred around 3.15 pm on VIP Road when a Lamborghini Revuelto, estimated to be worth nearly Rs 10 crore, allegedly went out of control and rammed pedestrians and multiple vehicles. Witnesses told police the car was being driven at high speed, with some claiming the driver appeared intoxicated, though authorities said medical confirmation was awaited.

The vehicle reportedly first struck an auto-rickshaw before crashing into a parked Royal Enfield motorcycle, flinging the rider several feet into the air. The car then dragged the motorcycle briefly before hitting an electric pole and stopping.

One of the injured, Taufiq Ahmed, told NDTV he was standing beside his parked bike when the vehicle struck him, leaving him with serious leg injuries. Eyewitnesses also alleged the driver initially attempted to flee, while private security personnel travelling in another vehicle tried to shield him from the crowd. Locals later damaged the Lamborghini and pulled the driver out before police intervened.

Officers seized the car and shifted both the injured and Mishra to a private hospital. Transport records show the Lamborghini is registered in Rohini, North West Delhi.

Luxury assets and seizures

During the 2024 raids, Income Tax teams reportedly recovered large quantities of cash, jewellery and luxury assets linked to the Mishra family. At Shivam Mishra’s Vasant Vihar residence in Delhi, officials seized several high-end vehicles carrying the same number plate series. The fleet reportedly included a Rolls-Royce Phantom, a McLaren, a Porsche and a Lamborghini Revuelto, the same model involved in the Kanpur crash.

Authorities were also reported to have confiscated over Rs 11 crore in cash across multiple searches, along with expensive watches and other valuables. One diamond-studded watch alone was estimated to be worth nearly Rs 2.5 crore.
