India Post to be transformed into logistics firm, says Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman

The postal department has the potential to take services to the doorsteps of people in rural and remote areas, Scindia had said, adding that he will be looking at all potential services to increase the revenue of India Post.

The government will transform India Post into a logistics organisation, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said while presenting the Budget for 2025-26 on February 1.

Presenting the first full Budget of Modi 3.0, the minister promised "transformative" reforms in six sectors —  tax, power, urban sector, mining, financial sector and regulatory reforms.

The transformation of India Post was first announced by Telecom Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia in September. Scindia had said that government was looking to transform India Post into a logistics company and increase the revenue of the department by 50-60 percent over the next 3-4 years.

In the meeting in December, Scindia had presented a new development plan for India Post. He shared that the department is working on rationalising costs and aiming to make maximum processes digital.
