Bank Holiday Today: January 2026 begins with a mix of national holidays, regional festivals, and statutory bank closures, making it important for customers to plan their banking activities in advance.
According to the Reserve Bank of India's (RBI) holiday calendar, bank holidays during the month differ from state to state, as they are based on local festivals, notifications issued under the Negotiable Instruments Act, and account-closing requirements.
New Year's Day on January 1, Thursday, is not a nationwide bank holiday. However, banks will remain closed on this day in select states, including Tamil Nadu, West Bengal, Arunachal Pradesh, Sikkim, Tripura, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, and Nagaland, in accordance with RBI guidelines. Customers are advised to check state-specific bank holiday schedules before planning important financial transactions to avoid any inconvenience.
It is also important to note that banks will not remain closed on all these dates across the country at the same time. The total number of holidays reflects closures in different regions due to state-level observances. For instance, banks will observe a holiday for Thiruvalluvar Day in Tamil Nadu, while branches in other states will function as usual.
As per the RBI calendar, bank branches may remain closed for up to 15 days in January 2026 in various parts of the country, including Sundays and the second and fourth Saturdays.
The Reserve Bank of India classifies bank holidays under three categories: holidays under the Negotiable Instruments Act, holidays under the Negotiable Instruments Act and Real Time Gross Settlement (RTGS) holidays, and bank account-closing holidays. Since these holidays are linked to local festivals and state notifications, they are not observed uniformly by all banks across India.
