Toyota Kirloskar Motor has announced a recall of over 11,000 units of its mid-size SUV, the Urban Cruiser Hyryder, owing to a faulty fuel gauge. All the affected units are of the petrol variants.

According to the industry body Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM), 11,529 units of the Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder have been impacted. These vehicles were manufactured from December 9, 2024, to April 29, 2025.

"The subject vehicles (gasoline variant only) are equipped with a fuel gauge in the combi meter (analog type) to indicate the fuel level in the fuel tank. In certain conditions, the fuel gauge may not indicate the correct fuel level in the fuel tank. As a result, even when the fuel level in the tank falls below the designed threshold, the low fuel level warning lamp may not glow," SIAM said, describing the potential defect.

"In this condition, the driver will not be alerted about the low fuel level. Hence, the engine may stop/stall due to a no-fuel condition," it added.

Toyota sold 60,388 units of the Urban Cruiser Hyryder in FY25. In FY26 year-to-date, the vehicle has garnered sales of 56,754 units and is only behind the Creta (1,17,726 units) in the mid-size SUV segment.

The Urban Cruiser Hyryder is offered with petrol, CNG and hybrid powertrains. The petrol version employs a 1.5-litre engine, which generates 103PS of maximum power and 139Nm of peak torque. The engine can be mated either with a 5-speed MT or a 6-speed AT. The CNG version is good for 88PS and 121Nm with a 5-speed MT.

The hybrid version offers an intelligent electric hybrid system with a maximum combined power output of 116PS and peak engine torque of 122Nm, and motor torque of 141Nm. It is paired with an e-CVT.

The SUV gets features like a crystal acrylic grille, twin LED DRLs, 17-inch alloy wheels, ventilated leather seats, a panoramic sunroof, and a 9-inch touchscreen system supporting wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Other highlights include wireless charging, ambient lighting, a 360-degree camera, rear AC vents, and a 60:40 split-folding rear seat. It is priced between Rs 10,94,800 and Rs 19,76,300 (ex-showroom).

For reference, the Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder is the badge-engineered version of the Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara, co-developed by Japanese auto giants Toyota Motor Corporation and Suzuki Motor Corporation.

A similar recall, due to a faulty fuel level indicator, has also been announced by Maruti Suzuki India for the Grand Vitara, impacting 39,506 units manufactured from December 9, 2024, to April 29, 2025.
