Battery-as-a-Service (BaaS) is changing the entry economics of electric vehicles (EVs) in India. With BaaS, the Tata Punch EV can be bought at Rs 6.49 lakh, while the Maruti Suzuki e Vitara starts at Rs 10.99 lakh. Both prices are significantly lower than their standard ex-showroom tags as the battery cost shifts to a per-kilometre usage fee.
The Punch EV's standard price starts at Rs 9.69 lakh (ex-showroom) for the Smart 30kWh variant. Under BaaS, that variant is available at Rs 6.49 lakh with a battery EMI of Rs 2.6 per km. The BaaS price is calculated assuming usage of 60km per day, excludes charging cost and is available for personal users only.
That translates into an upfront reduction of Rs 3.2 lakh compared to the standard entry price.
For the e Vitara, the Delta variant is priced at Rs 15.99 lakh (ex-showroom) without BaaS. With BaaS, the same variant is available at Rs 10.99 lakh, plus a battery rental of Rs 3.99 per km. This lowers the entry cost by Rs 5 lakh.
For Punch EV buyers opting for BaaS at Rs 2.6 per km, a daily run of 60km would mean a battery usage cost of about Rs 156 per day, excluding charging cost.
For e Vitara Delta buyers at Rs 3.99 per km, a 60km daily run translates into about Rs 239 per day towards battery rent.
The model benefits customers who want a lower upfront outgo and are comfortable with a variable running-linked battery payment instead of owning the battery outright.
The Punch EV is offered with 30kWh and 40kWh LFP battery packs. The 40kWh pack delivers a claimed real-world range of around 355km and an ARAI-certified range of 468km. It supports fast charging from 20% to 80% in 26 minutes and can add 135km of real-world range in 15 minutes. The 40kWh battery carries a lifetime high-voltage warranty for the first owner, defined as 15 years from the date of registration.
The e Vitara comes with 49kWh and 61kWh LFP battery packs. The claimed range is 440km for the 49kWh version and 543km for the 61kWh version. Without BaaS, prices range from Rs 15.99 lakh to Rs 19.79 lakh (ex-showroom). With BaaS, prices range from Rs 10.99 lakh to Rs 14.29 lakh, with battery rent between Rs 3.99 per km and Rs 4.39 per km depending on the variant.
By separating the battery from the vehicle cost, BaaS reduces the immediate purchase burden by Rs 3.2 lakh to Rs 5 lakh in these two cases. For customers who prioritise lower upfront expenditure over outright ownership of the battery, this structure can make electric SUVs more accessible. The trade-off shifts part of the cost into a usage-linked payment over time.
