Maruti Suzuki India continued its dominance in the domestic passenger vehicle (PV) market in calendar year 2025 (CY25) even as homegrown majors, Mahindra & Mahindra and Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles, moved ahead of Hyundai Motor India in annual retail sales.
According to data sourced from the government's Vahan portal, Maruti Suzuki sold 17,84,788 units of PVs in CY25, logging a growth of 8.8% year-on-year (y-o-y). The volumes were driven by models like the Dzire sedan, Ertiga MPV, WagonR hatchback, Swift hatchback, Fronx SUV and Brezza SUV.
While Maruti Suzuki has been the long-time leader in the Indian PV space, Mahindra delivered its best-ever annual performance in CY25, surpassing not only Tata but also Hyundai.
Fuelled by SUVs like the Scorpio, XUV 3XO, Bolero and XUV700, Mahindra's retail sales rose 20.04% y-o-y to 5,88,994 units in CY25.
Mahindra's Automotive Division CEO Nalinikanth Gollagunta told Moneycontrol that India's SUV market, across both electric and internal combustion engine (ICE), has reached a new level of maturity and momentum. "At Mahindra, we are proud to have played a leading role in this transformation. Our electric origin SUVs, the BE 6 and XEV 9e, including special editions such as the BE6 Batman and Formula-e variant, have been embraced and celebrated by all. In just seven months, more than 30,000 customers are on the road, with the majority consistently achieving real-world ranges above 500km. India's EV market is transitioning from early adoption to mainstream, and Mahindra is leading this shift with the XEV 9S -- the nation's first seven‑seater electric SUV," he added.
Gollagunta said that Mahindra's ICE portfolio continues to thrive. "The XUV700 has crossed 3,00,000 proud owners in just over four years, while the XUV 3XO, launched just a year ago already reached 1,50,000 customers. The refreshed versions of the Thar, Bolero and Bolero Neo underscore the enduring demand for high‑performance, feature‑rich SUVs," he noted.
Mahindra will launch the XUV 7XO, the facelifted version of the XUV700, on January 5, further strengthening its robust SUV portfolio. The company is also preparing to ramp up its operational capacity of electric SUVs from 5,000 units per month to 8,000 units.
Amid strong demand for SUVs such as the Nexon and the Punch, and continued control of the passenger EV segment, Tata’s PV retail sales rose 5.58% y-o-y to 5,65,982 units in CY25.
For reference, the Nexon was the largest-selling car in India in October as well as November, while both Nexon and Punch are among the 10 largest-selling PVs in India in CY25. With the introduction of the Sierra SUV, market experts believe that Tata's sales will improve in CY26.
"CY25 saw steady progress for the PV industry, powered by a growing preference for SUVs and accelerating adoption of cleaner, emission-friendly powertrains. For Tata Motors, it was the fifth consecutive year of record-breaking annual sales," said Shailesh Chandra, MD and CEO, Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles.
Although Hyundai's retail sales came in almost flat at 5,59,039 units in CY25, leading to the carmaker slipping behind Mahindra and Tata, CY26 is expected to be better with the commencement of manufacturing operations at the new Pune facility.
While the Creta was again the volume driver for Hyundai, becoming the largest-selling SUV in India in CY25, the new Venue contributed handsomely as well.
